Sumatran elephant - Threats

What is left of an elephant "corridor" in TESSO NILO Palm oil plantation area, Riau, Sumatra.

Dramatic reduction of habitat

Conflicts between humans and elephants are occurring in Sumatra because the elephant's natural habitat is being dramatically reduced. Elephants invade farmlands and plantations, and until not a long time ago were being killed or captured as a result. In May 2002, a herd of 17 elephants was poisoned in a community oil palm plantation.
