Adaptation to Climate Change Toolkit: Coasts

Please check regularly for project updates or consider signing up to our email list (see below) so that we can send you new reports and resources as they become available.

The Adaptation Toolkit was funded by the John. T and Catherine D. MacArthur Foundation, Hewlett-Packard and the Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative (WHMSI).

The Adaptation Toolkit

The Adaptation to Climate Change Toolkit: Coasts is a series of tools and resources aimed at anyone with an interest in climate change adaptation for marine turtle habitats, including coastal managers, conservation practitioners, scientists and educators.

The Toolkit contents fall into four main categories:
i) The Toolkit in brief
ii) The problem: impacts and vulnerability
iii) The solutions: adaptation measures and manuals
iv) Additional resources
Links to pdf versions of each of the documents can be found below.

The Toolkit in brief

Start here to find out more about the Toolkit. This section includes a brief introduction to the Toolkit contents, including a Toolkit user guide and summaries of the main reports.

The problem: impacts and vulnerability

Climate change has the potential to affect sea turtles and their habitats in numerous ways. This section includes a review of marine turtles and climate change by Hawkes et al (2009) and a report examining climate projections for the Wider Caribbean and what these changes mean for regional sea turtle populations. Click here to go to our interactive map and find out climate projections for your location. Also included here is a study of sea-level rise at Playa Grande, Costa Rica and the implications for management of this area.

The solutions: adaptation measures and manuals

There are many opportunities for us to act to reduce the vulnerability of sea turtles and coastal habitats to a changing climate. The 'Adaptation to climate change: options for marine turtles' report describes the results of our research into what action can be taken now to help hawksbill turtles cope with climate change. Also included in this section is a 'Temperature Monitoring Manual' aimed at programs wishing to incorporate temperature monitoring into their work.

For more infromation about vulnerability and adaptation in Latin America and the Caribbean and further afield, this section includes a comprehensive resources document and other relevant WWF publications.
The resources document includes links to:

  • background information on climate change and adaptation
  • local, regional and international adaptation projects
  • tools and support for vulnerability assessment and adaptation
  • regional and international research institutions that focus on climate change, vulnerability and adaptation.
