Tuna on the move

Bluefin tuna

The Mediterranean is one of the two known spawning areas for Atlantic buefin tuna - and has been a hotspot for bluefin tuna fishing for centuries.

The migration of giant fish through the Straight of Gibraltar to spawn heralds the start of the fishing season. Traditionally caught using traps, the tuna have created vast wealth for those who dared bring them out of the water. That wealth continues today - but the traps have largely been replaced with high-tech fishing fleets, giant floating freezing factories, and new offshore fattening cages.

Follow the fate of the tuna...both those that manage to spawn, and the less fortunate thousands that are scooped out of the water.
