Better Management Practices (BMP´s) are tools that protect the environment by helping to measurably reduce major impacts of growing commodities on the planet´s water, air, soil and biological diversity. They also help producers to make profit in a sustainable way.
BMP´s have been developed for a wide range of activities eg. for fishing, farming and forestry. Using BMP´s often helps producers to participate in certification programmes such as FSC, MSC or RSPO that open new market opportunities.
WWF works with producers as well as those businesses that use natural commodities in their supply chains, to identify, develop and promote Better Management Practices.
Some concrete examples of BMP´s are:
WWF is conducting environmentally-friendly sugar production trials with sugarcane producers in several regions of the world including Australia, Central America, South Africa and Brazil to reduce soil erosion, pesticide use and water pollution caused by unsustainable sugar production and to better manage sugar production wastes.
The development of BMP´s often works in tandem with Roundtables (see Multi-Stakeholders Engagement).
