Protected Areas for a Living Planet: progress

Working in six ecoregions in Europe, Central Asia, and Africa
During the pre-project phase (2006), ecoregion workshops were held in six ecoregions in Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, which together encompass 34 countries:

Action plans for PoWPA delivery were subsequently developed, which define priority actions with measurable indicators, roles and responsibilities among the partners involved, specific time lines, and funding needs in order to establish a “road map” for PoWPA implementation in each ecoregion. A coordination mechanism has also been developed in each ecoregion to facilitate effective and efficient implementation.

Programme implementation began in early 2007. Partnerships are being sought to implement Protected Areas for a Living Planet in other ecoregions around the world.

Work to date indicates broad support for the programme’s approach and a latent capacity for work of this kind. Initial reactions from potential donors have also been favourable, not least because investment in this programme should automatically mean that activities funded are part of a larger, integrated national and ecoregional effort.
