WWF's solutions for environmental issues faced by the Alps

Quiet sunset in Ticino, Switzeraland

With the 1991 international Convention on the Protection of the Alps (a.k.a. the Alpine Convention) Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, Switzerland and the European Union) have committed themselves to the protection of the Alpine region.

The Convention recognizes the special natural and cultural diversity of the Alps and formulates concrete actions for its conservation.

WWF supports the treaty as the most far-reaching concept to date for the sustainable development of the Alpine region.

WWF's Ecoregion Conservation Plan (ECP) will make an important contribution to the Alpine Convention. Its map of regions with high biodiversity will show where to act first, supplementing the protocols of the Convention.

WWF works for the protection of the Alps at national level, through its national organizations and at international level, through the European Alpine Programme. THE EAP also seeks collaboration with other NGO's and interested partners. Its goal to achieve the conservation of biodiversity in the Alps through cross-boundary collaboration.
