The international WWF network joins forces to conserve the Amur-Heilong Ecoregion Complex (AHEC).


After having been active in the Russian Far East since 1994, WWF extended its ecoregional programme during the past three years in 2006 to also cover Northeast China and Northeast Mongolia. Furthermore, work on market and trade links was intensified, linking Russia and China to the markets in Japan, the US and Europe.

So far eight WWF national organizations and program offices in China, Germany, Japan, Mongolia, Netherlands, Russia, UK, US as well as WWF International work closely together to help save the Amur-Heilong ecoregion. A Steering Committee oversees the work in the ecoregion and gives strategic direction.

Amur-Heilong Programme Activities

The entire Amur Heilong Programme is based on the ecoregional approach and works under a joint programmatic structure.
The programme addresses six areas of work:
  • Species Conservation
  • Habitat Protection –ecological network
  • Amur Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM)
  • Law enforcement
  • Sustainable natural resource use
  • Communication
