Closely linked to the REDD mechanism (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), the three-year project aims at testing strategies to reduce CO2 emissions resulting from forest damage.
By 2011, the activities conducted on the different project sites will result in a reduction of the overall rate of deforestation and restoration of some degraded forests.
In 2004, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), emissions from deforestation were estimated to account for about 17% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, and nearly 28% of CO2 emissions.
This crucial topic was at the heart of the discussion during the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which took place in Bali in December 2007.
