Summary
The Species at Risk Research Fund for Ontario (SARRFO) is a collaborative effort between WWF Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
The SARRFO will support high-quality research projects in Ontario that directly result in the recovery of species at risk.
Background
The Species at Risk Research Fund for Ontario (SARRFO) is in its pilot year, and is a collaborative effort between WWF Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR).
The SARRFO will support high quality research projects that will directly result in the recovery of a species at risk in Ontario.
The work will include protection of crucial habitats such as wetlands, and evaluate the risks of turtle bycatch associated with inland commercial fisheries in Eastern Ontario.
Other species specifically targeted include fish such as the pugnose shiner and lake sturgeon, monarch butterfly, Eastern wolf and Fowler’s toad.
Objectives
The SARRFO will invest in scientific research projects that are of direct benefit to species at risk, including:
- the collection of baseline information about the threats to a species' survival
- identification of significant habitat and what is needed to ensure that it is conserved
- research to fill other information gaps and contribute to the development of recovery strategies.
Solution
The ESRF funding program (WWF Canada's long-running endangered species funding program) is being held for internal review by Environment Canada. SARRFO is running in the interim year until a decision is made on the future of ESRF.
