Many of the biodiversity threats in the NAEC are driven by economic forces and political decisions made at different levels. In order to develop sustainable solutions to a number of conservation problems in the Northern Andes, it is necessary to engage decision-makers and economic sectors in the identification of measures to check or reduce the impact of development processes. Some of the actions identified by the NAE program are:
- Development of policies to check and/or minimize the biophysical and socioeconomic impacts of infrastructure development.
- Development of policies to check and/or minimize the biophysical and socioeconomic impacts of oil exploitation and mining.
- Strengthening and/or establishing agreements with sectors involved to minimize the negative impacts of development processes.
