"Public participation in Mining activity" training workshop, 07 Feb.2007

As a part of a project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on “Public Monitoring of Corruption in the Mongolian Mining Sector”, WWF Mongolia organised a training workshop entitled “Public Participation in Mining Activity” from 4 to 8 February in Ulaanbaatar.

The workshop was a cooperative effort with other NGOs, including the Center of Human Health Rights and Development, Khovsogol Dalai Ezed, Onon-Ulz and Center of Civil Education.

In attendance at the workshop were the above mentioned NGOs and participants from civil environmental movements from Khovsgol, Selenge and Khentii provinces. The workshop allowed introduction to, and discussion about, newly adopted laws on mining and anti-corruption. Implementation of the laws was outlined, together with potential conflicts with mining interests and violations that may occur. Training was provided by specialists from the working group responsible for the development of the laws such as:

  • Ts.Damiran, Member of Parliament
  • Ts.Davaadorj, Head of the Department of Geology, Mining and Heavy Industry (part of the Ministry of Trade and Industry)
  • D.Monkhbaatar, Chairman of the Department of Land Management and Assets Registration Policy Coordination
  • D.Lamjav, civil consultant
  • B.Saran, Head of the Department for Nature, Environment and Geology Inspection
  • Specialists from the relevant government organizations
The participants were also introduced to Cadastre mapping for land exploitation and exploration by lecturers from the Remote Senses Laboratory of the Mongolian National University. The seminar succeeded in building knowledge in the civil participants, to allow them to participate in advocacy for the relevant laws and monitor corruption in the mining sector.
