Summary

The geographic information system (GIS) laboratory’s primary mandate is the systematic collection and storage of data on habitats and species in Pakistan and the development of easy-to-use standardized data and information sharing mechanism, widely used by organizations, scientists, institutions involved in conservation activities.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art tools and technology, remote sensing and biodiversity information science. It is staffed with professionals from the GIS, remote sensing, computing and biodiversity fields.

The activities of the GIS laboratory are directly in line with article 17 of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) on information exchange from all publicly available sources, relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. In this regard, 2 web portals (www.wildtracker.pk and www.esmap.pk) have been developed and the establishment of a biodiversity information infrastructure for Pakistan is on the way.
