Summary

WWF’s mission in the European Union (EU) is to address the root causes of biodiversity loss. Over the past 20 to 30 years EU Member States have witnessed major declines in farmland bird populations such as the corncrake (Crex crex) and skylark (Alauda arvensis) for example. It is feared that these declines will spread to the new Member States where political attention is focussing on economic growth rather than sustainable development.

The Regional Funds and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) together constitute 75% of the EU budget - more than EUR 30 billions and EUR 45 billions per year respectively - and have been identified by WWF as key drivers of biodiversity loss in the EU. However, with the current and forthcoming decisions on the budgets and allocations of these policies, WWF has the opportunity to ensure that they support sustainable development and implementation of EU environmental laws (including the EU Habitats and Water Framework Directives) on the ground, in particular in WWF’s priority river basins/ecoregions in Europe.

Objectives

-Contribute to ensuring EU agriculture policies, regulations and associated financial mechanisms.

- Support and deliver WWF's environmental objectives in Europe.

- Make a significant contribution to halting biodiversity loss by 2010, for the benefit of people and nature.
